Kitchen Decluttering Guide

Step-by-step process to clear the clutter and create space

1

Empty Everything

Remove all items from your cupboards and pantry. This gives you a fresh start and allows you to see exactly what you have. Clean shelves thoroughly while empty.

2

Check Expiration Dates

Discard anything past its expiration date. Be ruthless - expired items take up valuable space and can contaminate fresh food. Check canned goods, spices, and condiments carefully.

3

Identify Duplicates

Notice items you have multiples of. Keep what you realistically need and donate unopened extras. Consolidate partial packages of the same item into one container.

4

Assess Usage

If you haven't used something in the past year, consider whether you really need it. Donate specialty ingredients you bought for one recipe and never used again.

5

Categorize What Remains

Group similar items together: baking supplies, breakfast foods, snacks, dinner ingredients, etc. This makes the next organization step much easier.

6

Make Donation Piles

Set aside unopened, non-expired items you don't want to donate to food banks. Discard opened items you won't use and anything expired or damaged.

7

Plan Your System

Before putting items back, plan your organization system. Decide on zones, what containers you need, and where frequently-used items should go.

8

Implement & Maintain

Organize items according to your plan. Label everything clearly. Establish a rule: when something new comes in, something old must go out to prevent future clutter.
